Students are always encouraged to complement their coursework at Columbia by taking advantage of opportunities to study and do research in Latin America. Visits to Latin America are often the best way to understand the latest trends and issues in public policy research as well as to polish language skills. ILAS serves as a clearinghouse for information on opportunities for exchange programs, seminars, and short-term research visits generated by an informal network of Latin American academic institutions. ILAS has developed particularly close relations with such institutions as the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas in Mexico City, the School of Economics and Business Administration of the Universidade de São Paulo, the Post-Graduate Schools and Institutes of the Fundacão Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and the Universidad Externado de Colombia in Bogota. In addition to these, many other Latin American institutions offer opportunities for short-term affiliation for SIPA students. Interested students are invited to stop by ILAS to discuss their particular research interests and reminded that ILAS annually sponsors a competition to permit selected students to travel to Latin America during the summers and over the winter break.
