Black Americas: African-American Studies and the Constitution of Black Social Thought in Brazil in the 1970s

April 6, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series invites you to its discussion titled, “Black Americas: African-American Studies and the Constitution of Black Social Thought in Brazil in the 1970s” with Rafael Petry Trapp, Ph.D. Visiting Scholar at ILAS, UFF Brazil.

This research is part of an emerging area of studies in recent years, about the relations, exchanges and circularity of references among intellectuals, scholars and black activists from Brazil and the United States during the Twentieth century. We are especially interested in the “black sociology” of Eduardo de Oliveira e Oliveira, an African-Brazilian sociologist who in the 1970s was an important linking intellectual between the Brazilian Black Movement and American black scholars. Oliveira personal experience with “African-American Studies” in the 1970s, though forgotten, was remarkable in his sociological thought and proposals for the education of black people in Brazil, with a significant influence in the constitution of contemporary Brazilian Black Movement, mainly in São Paulo. Oliveira trajectory is understood as a reference point to a comprehensive view on the history of relations between intellectuals of Brazil and the United States in the fields of race relations, blackness and education.

Rafael Petry Trapp is a Ph.D. Candidate in History at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF). B.A. and a M.A. also in History, he has been doing research about African-Brazilian intellectual history, with great interest on education and racial question. His current doctoral research investigates the constitution of black social thought in Brazil through the analysis of the work of Brazilian black sociologist Eduardo de Oliveira e Oliveira in the 1970s. Rafael is Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Latin American Studies of Columbia University, sponsored by Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation (FAPERJ).
