Latin Lab @ GSAPP – A Space of Encounter: The Abraham Reyes Cultural Action Center at Petare, Caracas

December 2, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

With María Isabel Peña, Architect and Fulbright Visiting Scholar

The Abraham Reyes Cultural Action Center (ARCAC) is an urban design and architectural proposal aiming to become a place of encounter for Petare, one of the most violent and poor barrios of East Caracas of about 300,000 inhabitants. The project receives the support of the Venezuelan system of public orchestras for children, and is lead by the Fé y Alegría Foundation, a Jesuit organization that has worked in the area for more than 50 years ago. The Latin American Development Bank (CAF) has awarded the ARCAC for its design approach to urban upgrading, and as a reference to other poor areas in Venezuela.

María Isabel Peña de Urbina is a Venezuelan architect and currently a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University. She is a former Director of the Instituto de Urbanismo of the Universidad Central de Venezuela; Assistant Director of the World Heritage Office at the UCV; Assistant Professor of Urban Design at the UCV; and guest professor at the Wentworth Institute of Technology.  María Isabel carries her professional practice with projects in New York, Caracas and Panama. She was the co-conductor of the program La ciudad deseada at 97.7 FM Cultural Radio Station of Caracas, and co-author of the Architecture and Landscape guide of Caracas (Junta de Andalucia 2015.) She holds an MSc in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University.
