The Blurred Territories Symposium will expand the understanding of urbanization in Latin America by presenting a porous ground where civic societies, policy makers and corporations construct landscapes beyond the urban-rural dialectic. It will present, dissect, and reframe the existing relationship between rural and urban landscapes in the region, by critically assessing the instrumental relevance and conceptual pertinence of the lenses through which multiple and diverse actors conceive, transact and intervene the Latin American territory.

Latin American economies have become increasingly dependent on the extraction and export of raw materials. Despite an extractive economy has been present since pre-colonial times, current institutional re-arrangements allow for unprecedented transformations in land-use change. As a result, territorial reconfigurations open new frontiers of opportunity and dispute. In this context, while social movements across the continent represent alternative interests that leverage the landscape beyond the promise of development, cities continue to proliferate towards the metropolitan regions, intensifying a demand for policies, land and resource supply.

This symposium will explore a series of methods used to analyze, approach and intervene amidst cultural, environmental, political and economic frictions where new prompts for design pedagogy and practice emerge. By bringing into focus physical, symbolic, and regulatory disruptions in Latin American urban and rural landscapes, Blurred Territories presents a series of conditions that evidence how each category is not only implied, but interdependent to the construction of its supposed opposite.

Three separate lecture-panels organized by Latin GSD to be held on April 8, April 13, and April 19.
