Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series – The Transformation of the Urban Accumulation Circuit in the City of Rio de Janeiro post-1990 and its Relation with Public Policy

April 7, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies in its Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series. The lecture, entitled “The Transformation of the Urban Accumulation Circuit in the City of Rio de Janeiro post-1990 and its Relation with Public Policy” will be given by Eduardo Pontes.

Economic groups related to public works sector have led to a reconfiguration of the urban accumulation circuit in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The entry of this category in urban accumulation corresponded to the reconfiguration of coalition and local political power hegemony, and it ushered in a new relationship standard between the Government and Capital, allowing the formation of a new Urban Regime government in the city ever since. The main hypothesis of the lecture is that urban accumulation is central to the political economy of the city.

Eduardo Pontes is a PhD Candidate at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IPPUR/UFRJ). Eduardo holds a BA in Economics, an MBA in Administration at IBMEC Business School/RJ, and a specialization and MSc in Urban Planning at IPPUR/UFRJ. He currently works as an Economist at the Brazilian Census Bureau (IBGE).
