Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series – How the New Civil Procedure Code will Improve Business

January 28, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies in its Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series. The lecture, entitled “How the New Civil Procedure Code will Improve Business” will be given by Rodrigo Otávio Barioni.

In March 2015, Brazil enacted a New Civil Procedure Code, scheduled to go into effect in March 2016. This New Civil Procedure Code was designed to bring more reliability in the results of civil procedures filed before courts. It establishes rules to streamline the procedure, improve alternative dispute resolutions methods and assure more certainty and predictability, through a system of precedents. As a result, the New Civil Procedure Code should increase investors’ confidence in Brazil regarding the solutions of disputes and the knowledge of rules that they must follow in their business. The presentation will cover the main reasons for the New Civil Procedure Code and some of the major guidelines that can bring a horizon of trust in the Brazilian judicial system.

Rodrigo Otávio Barioni is a lawyer. Rodrigo earned his Master and PhD in Law from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (Brazil). He is a Professor of Civil Procedure Law at Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, the Vice-President of the Centro de Estudos Avançados de Processo, a Member of Instituto Brasileiro de Direito Processual, and a Member of the Board of Revista de Processo (Procedure Law Journal). Rodrigo has also authored books and several academic articles regarding civil procedure.
