Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series – Lithuanian Diaspora in America

Join the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies in its Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series. The lecture, entitled “Lithuanian Diaspora in America” will be given by Erick Reis Godliauskas Zen.

The lecture will explore by which means Lithuania diaspora in US, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay were able to keep their sense of community and their strategy of national identity in America, where most Lithuanians established themselves during the first independence period, from 1918 to 1940.

Erick Reis Godliauskas Zen holds a PhD in Social History and has been researching about Lithuanian immigration to South America since 2001. He has a Master in Social History from São Paulo University (USP), 2006 and PhD, 2012. He is the author of three books in Portuguese, “Identity in Conflict. Lithuanian Immigration in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay” (EdUFSCar, 2014), “Immigration and Revolution: Lithuanian, Polish and Russian individuals under Deops/SP surveillance” (Edusp, 2010), and “The Seed of Revolution: The Lithuanian community under Deops surveillance” (Humanitas, 2006). He has also published articles in different academic journals, in Brazil and abroad, concerning the Eastern European and Russian immigrations to Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Erick is a History Professor at Unisepe/FIVR, Brazil. Currently, Erick is a Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Latin American Studies, Columbia University, with CAPES sponsorship.
