Building Bridges: Two Educational Journeys from Cuba to the US

Two Cuban students currently studying in the US will discuss:

  • What are the main challenges for Cuban students in the US?
  • What are the main differences between student life in Cuba and in the US?
  • What role can educational exchanges play in developing trust, building bridges, and supporting engagement between Cuba and the US?

Teresa Garcia Castro is currently pursuing an Master’s in foreign policy and national security at the School of International Service at American University. She received her BA (Summa Cum Laude) in International Relations from the Instituto Superior de Relaciones Internacionales in Havana. After graduation, she worked at the Cuban Ministry of Culture promoting artistic and academic exchanges between Cuba and the US. In Washington she has worked as a Research Associate at the Public International Law and Policy Group focusing on peace negotiations, post-conflict constitutions, and transitional justice. She is currently a research assistant at American University and a research associate for the Cuba program at the Washington Office for Latin America.

Harold Cardenas Lema is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He received his BA (Summa Cum Laude) in Cultural Studies at the University of Matanzas. After graduation he taught Philosophy for five years and later worked on the Temas Quarterly. Political analyst and blogger he is the Editor of La Joven Cuba. He has collaborated with BBC, Radio Netherland and other media. Currently he is a Research Assistant in Columbia University.
