Challenging Social Inequality: The Landless Rural Workers Movement and Agrarian Reform in Brazil

Please join the Center for Brazilian Studies in this lecture, by Miguel Carter, about the landless rural workers movement and agrarian reform in Brazil.

Miguel Carter is the Founding Director of a new research center in Paraguay, DEMOS – Centro para la Democracia, la Creatividad y la Inclusión Social. Prior to this he served as a Scholar in Residence and Lecturer at American University’s School of International Service. Carter received his Doctorate in Political Science at Columbia University in New York, and served as a Research Fellow in Politics at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Brazilian Studies. He is the editor and translator of Challenging Social Inequality: The Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and Agrarian Reform in Brazil, published in Portuguese with the Editora da UNESP and Duke University Press. Carter is also the author of two forthcoming books, For Land, Love & Justice: The Origins of Brazil’s Landless Social Movement (with Duke University Press) and Stroessner Vive: Legados Autoritarios y Democracia en el Paraguay, 1989-2008 (with Servilibro in Asunción). In addition, he has published several articles and chapters on the struggle for land reform in Brazil, Paraguay’s democratic transition, and civil society development in Latin America. Carter has consulted for numerous international development organizations, including the UNDP, The World Bank, and Creative Associates, and served with Paraguay’s leading human rights organization, the Comité de Iglesias para Ayudas de Emergencia (CIPAE). He is currently leading the effort to establish a Commission for Democracy in Latin America in collaboration with the government of Uruguay and a network of prominent Latin America experts in democracy and human rights.
