Cuba and China: The Trouble with Trust

September 24 @ 6:15 pm - 8:00 pm

China is an important economic partner for Cuba, but their broader socio-cultural relations are less well understood.  This talk explores bilateral ties from the replacement of African slavery with indentured Chinese workers in the mid-19th century to the current rollout of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and attempts to manage the black market in Havana’s Chinatown.  Analyzing how these interactions have been conditioned by trust (and its absence), I present findings, images, and updates from my book Diaspora and Trust: Cuba, Mexico, and the Rise of China.  The book can be downloaded free of charge here.
