February 9, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join the Greater Caribbean Center in its Brown Bag Series. The lecture, entitled “Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall: Why is Cuba Sexy and Puerto Rico not at all?,” will be given by Prof. Frances Negrón-Muntaner. The lecture will be followed by a discussion moderated by Prof. Maja Horn.

Frances Negrón-Muntaner is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at Columbia University.

Maja Horn is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Latin American Cultures at Barnard College.

Toward the end of the 19th century, North Americans were constructing an image of the neighbor islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico that was different from the image the Spaniards had of their colonies on the other side of the ocean.  Cuba and Puerto Rico elicited very different emotions from Uncle Sam – from fascination to disdain- giving way to different versions of a colonial project and an imaginary of sensuality that has had deep consequences.
