How Cryptocurrencies are Empowering the Community Currencies Scenario

January 25, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Brazil Research Seminar Series invites you to its discussion titled,“How Cryptocurrencies are Empowering the Community Currencies Scenario” with Eduardo H. Diniz, professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas, São Paulo, Brazil.

The speaker Eduardo H. Diniz is professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas, São Paulo, Brazil and is a long time researcher of banking technologies for financial inclusion. He has published papers in international journals and conferences, taking part in academic and for practitioner events from Central Banks and Banking Associations in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, India and many other countries

These new cryptoplatforms for community currencies could represent a solution to some problems historically associated with their adoption, allowing economies of scale and better information management on the circulation of money in a given community.
A better understanding about the emergence of crypto-community currencies is of great relevance for practitioners and scholars for at least two reasons. First because blockchain made possible to create a payment community including people from the whole planet, such is the case of the proposed Bancor Network, that promises automatically calculate the price for any cryptocurrency, making them universally convertible one to another, no matter where they were created. And, second, because blockchain makes accessible at reasonable cost a secure, open and decentralized mechanism to develop payment systems, a long time expected solution for many problems found while implementing community currencies systems that were limited to the trade-off between low cost operation and security.

In this lecture we intend to discuss the scenarios and perspectives for crypto-community currencies in the near future and its potential for developing countries, in particular in Brazil.
