Media, Violence, Perceptions and Possibilities for Peace in Mexico

Please join The University Seminar on Latin America for a lecture on “Media, Violence, Perceptions and Possibilities for Peace in Mexico” with Dr. Mauricio Meschoulam, Professor of International Relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana and Director of the Centro de Investigacion para la Paz Mexico. 

 

Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative approaches, Dr. Meschoulam and his colleagues have conducted a series of studies exploring the role of mass media, the government and organized crime in the social construction of values, perceptions and conceptions about violence and possibilities for social peace in Mexico. His talk on February 2nd will focus on policy implications of the ongoing work.

 

 

Mauricio Meschoulam is a Mexican a professor of International Relations since 1993, an analyst, and an international speaker. He has a PhD in Public Policy and Administration with specialization in Terrorism, Mediation and Peace. He hast taught at Universidad Iberoamericana, at the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the Technological Autonomous Institute of Mexico (ITAM). His areas of investigation relate to geopolitics, conflicts, terrorism, and peacebuilding. He is a columnist for the newspaper El Universal. He also works for radio stations, as well as national and international TV networks such as Televisa and CNN, analyzing international affairs. He founded and is the director of the Mexico Research Center for Peace, which is currently conducting research about the psychosocial effects of violence in Mexico, the impact of fear, and the role of the mass media in the social construction of perceptions about violence and peace. The Center also develops training programs and public policy recommendations. Its research has been published nationally and internationally and will be soon replicated in other countries. Mauricio’s most recent books are: Syria’s war, five years of analysis, and ISIS, understanding its war to find peace.
