Political, Social, and Economic Development in Brazil I: Why are Brazil and Mexico not rich?

The two largest economies in Latin America share in common disappointing economic growth over the past few decades. Yet evidence shows that the root causes seem to be dissimilar.

Edmar Bacha is the Director of the Institute of Economic Police Studies Casa das Garças. He was the former President of the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES) and Economic Adviser to President Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
