Public Policies in Gender and Diversity in PT Governments

March 9, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Brazil Brown Bag Seminar Series invites you to its discussion titled, “Public Policies in Gender and Diversity in PT Governments” with Miriam Pillar GrossiFull Professor at Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and the Ruth Cardoso Chair at Columbia University.

During the 13 years of the Lula and Dilma governments (2003-2016) in Brazil, there were numerous public policies about diversity: gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, etc. In association with social movements and public universities, these policies had a strong impact in the field of basic education. We will present an overview of these federal programs, analyzing in more detail two actions developed by the Ministry of Education: teacher training in Gender and Diversity in Schools and the PROEX extension program.

Miriam Pillar Grossi is full Professor of the Department of Anthropology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. She served as Director of the Center for Gender Identity and Subjectivity (Núcleo de Identidades de Gênero e Subjetividades (NIGS)) since 1991. Pillar Grossi was also President of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology – ABA (2004/2006) and Vice-President of the International Union of Anthropology and Ethnology Scices – IUAES (2013-2018).
