Please join the Institute of Latin American Studies in its final installment of  the film screening and research presentation series titled New Narratives of the ‘Proceso’: 40 Years After the Last Dictatorship in Argentina (1976-2016) with Dr. Luciana Zorzoli, Fulbright Visiting Scholar at ILAS and PhD, Univeristy of Buenos Aires, IdIHCS-CONICET.  This November 29  research presentation will be on The military policy for trade unions: promotion and demotion for restructuring the workers’ organizations in Argentina (1976-1983). Please see below for the full series calendar of events.

Dr. Luciana Zorzoli holds a PhD in Social Science from the University of Buenos Aires and is a CONICET Postdoctoral Fellow at Instituto de Investigaciones en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (IdIHCS, Argentina). Currently she is working as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University in the United States. Her research focuses on the study of the transformation processes of trade union structures in the Southern Cone analyzing the past military governments, their consequences and the impact of international organizations in labor and trade unions.

The last military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983) has been described in many ways in the last forty years and some topics about it are widely known, especially those that linked the coup d’état with the state violence against the desaparecidos in the so called ‘dirty war’. This film screen proposal attempts to share with the Institute other topics that have been developed in the last few years, issues that are present both in documentaries and in commercial cinema as part of new areas of social inquiry. The selection allows for the problematizing of some topics related to Dr. Zorzoli’s PhD dissertation, such as the social struggles before and after the coup, the mechanism of deliberation and creation of laws during the de facto administration, and the role of the institutions of the civil society during the military government. The screening sessions will allow a reconsideration of the Argentinean recent history while opening new debates about it under Dr. Zorzoli’s chairing as Fulbright Visiting Fellow.

CAL: EL CONGRESO EN DICTAURA (CAL: The congress in dictatorship)

Documentary / 48 min / Spanish with subtitles / 2014

The documentary made by the group “Colectivo Alambre” explains and bring to light the law making process of the Legislative Advisory Commission (known as CAL) that gave the legal framework to the military government. The lawmaking processes in the CAL is still overlooked, as it was considered as a mere consultative body staffed by military officers. Quite the contrary the military staff selected by the Junta to work on the CAL were granted decision-making autonomy and they were very active in term of seeking technical, professional and interested advice from those subjected to the new laws. Several imposed significant changes- like the financial system laws or the trade unions bill of 1979- and some are still in force.

70 Y PICO (70 and Pico)

Documentary / 103 min / Spanish with subtitles / 2016

Directed by Mariano Corbacho the documentary addresses the filmmaker concerns about his grandfather role and responsibilities, as a civil associate, during the last military dictatorship in Argentina. While investigating the process of political mobilization in Buenos Aires with special attention to the student’s movement during the seventies, the film digs into the role of Corbacho’s grandfather as Dean of the Architecture School at UBA and teacher at ESMA, a military school where the Navy run a giant concentration camp since 1976. Corbacho’s concerns lead to a dialogue with “grandpa Pico” who was himself open to being interviewed.
