El salario mínimo como productor de pobreza en México (in Spanish)

The Center for Mexican Studies is pleased to invite you to our last Mexican Monday Series event of the semester. Our guest, Ricardo Becerra, will deliver the lecture “El salario mínimo como productor de pobreza en México” (in Spanish).

 

 

Ricardo Becerra Laguna is currently the Undersecretary of Economic Development and Sustainability in the Government of Mexico City. He also serves as the the President of the Institute of Studies for the Democratic Transition (IETD), an independent think tank founded in 1989.

Becerra Laguna was an advisor to the President of the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), José Woldenberg, from 1996 to 2001, as well as the Coordinator of Advisors to the Executive Secretary from 2008 until early 2013. He has also served as General Director of Attention to Society and Institutional Relations at Mexico’s Federal Institute of Transparency (IFA). He has been a Consultant for the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Becerra Laguna was in charge of the task force that designed and implemented the amendment to Article Six of the Mexican Constitution, which made information access a fundamental right for all Mexicans. He won the National Journalism for the script of the series “Mexico: History of Its Democracy”.

He has written in newspapers such as Uno Más Uno, Reforma, El Universal, El Economista, and La Crónica. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Nexos, coauthor of several books on economic, electoral, and political issues such as: La mecánica del cambio político en México (The Mechanics of Political Change in Mexico); México y Chile: Dos transiciones frente a frente (“Mexico and Chile: Two Transitions Face to Face”); Equidad Social y Parlamentarismo (“Social Equity and Parliamentarism”); and Del Salario Mínimo al Salario Digno (“From Minimum Wage to Dignified Wage”).

Becerra Laguna holds an Economics degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
