The Tragedy and Opportunity in Puerto Rico

September 6, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Greater Caribbean Studies Center and the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University invite you to the first talk of the fall semester- with Angel Collado-Schwarz, Historian and Adjunct Professor (SIPA, Columbia University).

The islands of Puerto Rico have always been a colony since the Spaniards occupied it in the early 1500s. The colonial status is the seed of the current social and economic crisis. Could this crisis create an opportunity for Puerto Rico?

Dr. Collado Schwarz is a graduate from the University of Puerto Rico and Syracuse University in New York, and has a doctorate from the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain. He has published four books on Puerto Rican history and politics, has served as a professor for the Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico and the Faculty of Law of the University of Puerto Rico, and was a visiting lecturer at the universities of Harvard, Yale, MIT, Columbia, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and the Tshinghua University in Beijing, among others.
