Venezuela: El incierto final de la revolución Bolivariana

April 5, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join the Greater Caribbean Center in its Brown Bag Series. The talk, entitled “Venezuela: El Incierto Final de la Revolucion Bolivariana,” will be given by Francisco Suniaga, author of El pasajero de Truman (2008), and will be followed by a discussion moderated by Professor Gabriel Kessler.

This talk will highlight the challenges that the opposition in Venezuela faces after the overwhelming victory in the elections of December 2016. The major challenge is avoiding an onset of violence that could be caused by the terrible economic crisis and ongoing efforts to oust President Nicolás Maduro. The new majority is demanding change, but the government- backed by the military- is showing resistance in ways that are unconstitutional. Venezuelans can sense the end to the turbulent Bolivarian Revolution; yet, it seems that no one knows how to get there.

Francisco Suniaga is a Venezuelan lawyer with graduate degrees in International affairs from Universidad Central de Venezuela and from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He taught law courses at the School of Law of the Universidad Central de Venezuela between 1987 and 2006. Between 2004 and 2009 he wrote weekly op eds in El Nacional, El Universal, and Economía Hoy and was editor of Éxxito, a magazine specializing in economics and politics.  In 2005 he published his novel La otra isla (Oscar Todtmann Editorial) later published internationally.  In 2008 he published El pasajero de Truman (Random House Mondadori), the most sold novel in Venezuela up to date.  Since then he has published the novel Esta gente and Margarita infanta, an autofiction work that compiles his early literary writings.  In 2011 he was invited to the International Writers Program of Iowa University.

Gabriel Kessler is a Tinker Visiting Professor at the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) at Columbia University.

****Talk will be given in Spanish.
