O’Gorman Program

CONACYT Fellowships

ILAS has a strong collaboration with CONACYT, the Mexican National Council on Science and Technology, which includes an agreement signed in December 2005 to support Mexican students admitted to Columbia doctoral programs. This agreement has been instrumental to upholding the long tradition of Mexican students at Columbia. (Read the Columbia University press release here.)

In 2007 Columbia signed an agreement with CONACYT to create the Edmundo O’Gorman Visiting Scholars program. The program provides financing for short-term (four to eight-week) visits to Columbia by scholars and scientists from any discipline who are working in Mexican institutions of higher education. Its purpose is to strengthen scholarly ties between Columbia and the academic and research community of Mexico. Its name honors Edmundo O’Gorman (1906-1995), one of the most influential Mexican historians of the twentieth century.
