The seminar proposes a connected history of the borderlands with the native people in the U.S.-Mexico, Argentina, and Chile during the 19th Century Wars of National Expansion. We follow the interactions of travelers, technicians, and soldiers with Comanches, Kiowas, Apaches, Navajos, etc., and on the South America borders with the Mapuches, Pampas, and Tehuelches, paying attention to how warfare, diplomacy, indigenous social structures, and resistance shaped the formation of modern States. The seminar shows the professor’s own methodological experience in historical research, combining heterogeneous archives alongside disciplines like Anthropology, Archaeology and Geography. Though not required, it would be helpful for the students to have basic Spanish reading level.

Race is a global line with local contours; it is key for students of international and public affairs to understand the language of race in the Brazilian context in its entire complexity. The short course "Race in Brazil" provides a comprehensive, yet comparative and in-depth, analysis of contemporary black politics in Brazil. The main objective is to equip students with an analytical framework to understand from the Brazilian perspective the theoretical nuances (part 1 of the course), the movements related to black activism (part 2) and, finally, the public policies for the advancement of racial equality in Brazil (part 3). The course is based mainly on contemporary and avant garde literature on black politics in Brazil, and navigates around issues of race, law, economics and public policy at the forefront of racial challenges in Brazil and elsewhere.
