Purpose
Eligibility
The Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies Conference Travel Grant Program provides financial assistance to defray the costs of presenting at an academic conference. Students must submit proof of acceptance to present at a conference as part of their application (or other formal confirmation, such as a letter of invitation).
The Lemann Center will offer a limited number of conference grants each year. Applying for assistance does not automatically grant assistance. The Lemann Center and ILAS will review applications and make decisions based on presentation abstracts, applicants’ CVs, the merits of the conference/presentation opportunity, and availability of funding. Preference will be given to presentations related to Brazil.
To be eligible to apply, students must be currently enrolled at any Columbia school. Barnard and TC students are also eligible to apply. Students must also be enrolled at the time of the conference and must have been accepted to present a paper, article, or poster at a conference at the time of application.

A maximum of 1,000USD per participant.
Funding may be used for:
Flights/trains to and from the city where the conference will take place (reimbursement will be only for economy fares).
Ground transportation to/from the airport or train station in the city where the conference will take place.
Hotel or short term housing in the city where the conference will take place (maximum fares/night must be in line with Columbia’s travel policies).
Registration fees for the conference.
Funding may not be used for meals or other expenses not included above. The eligible travel expenses will be reimbursed to the student after the conference or presentation opportunity. Students will need to submit receipts of expenses in order to receive reimbursement, and need to abide by university travel policies (https://universitypolicies.columbia.edu/content/travel-expense-policy). Reimbursement for travel that does not fit university policies will not be eligible for reimbursement. Air and train itineraries and fares should be submitted for ILAS for review prior to purchasing tickets.

The deadline is 2 months before the event.
Students may only receive support once a year, but can apply every year.If the requested amount does not reach 1,000USD, students may not apply twice a year for different conferences until they meet 1,000USD.

Students must submit:
Proof of acceptance to present at a conference.
An abstract of the paper/presentation/poster that will be presented.
Current CV.
A proposed travel budget. In the budget, please include if you request or are planning to request funding from another source.
Student’s responsibilities upon receiving the grant

Preference will be given to presentations related to Brazil.
Should the student be granted assistant, the student must post during the conference and mention the Lemann Center and ILAS. OR
The student may share a picture and five lines related to their presentation with ILAS so ILAS and the Lemann Center can post on the student’s participation in the event.
