1st Black Brazilian Women Intellectuals International Conference: Quilombo as Global Black

Solidarity in the Past, Present and Future
October 29 - November 19, 2021
Virtual Platform

This event sheds light on the different generations of Black Brazilian women as producers of knowledge and agents of liberation. Despite intersectional oppressions, Black Brazilian women have a long and rich tradition in the national and international struggle against racism and sexism and for social justice. They forge innovative concepts of citizenship, democracy and rights that expand the decolonization power of the African diaspora. However, his legacy remains invisible both in Brazil and abroad. In this event, we will highlight the various contributions of Black Brazilian women to the understanding and transformation of society through their knowledge, memories, affections, bodies and practices, making the Quilombo  a real practice until today.

Carolina Maria de Jesus was a prolific Black Brazilian writer and author of Quarto de Despejo (Child of the Dark), in which she narrates the lived experience of her family in the outskirts of São Paulo in the 1960’s.
