A Conversation with Governor Axel Kicillof
Summary: The Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) at Columbia University is pleased to invite you to a conversation with Axel Kicillof, Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, on the economic and political transformations shaping Argentina and the region amid a shifting global order. Governor of Argentina's largest province and former Economy Minister, Kicillof will explore the country's development prospects, the implications of rising geopolitical tensions and economic fragmentation, and how governments and political forces across Latin America are responding to this new landscape.
The conversation will be moderated by Professor María Victoria Murillo, and will be conducted in Spanish.
Speaker Bio: Axel Kicillof has served as Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires since 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. He is also President of the Justicialist Party of Buenos Aires and one of the most prominent opposition figures to Javier Milei’s government. An economist with a Ph.D. from the University of Buenos Aires, Kicillof served as Argentina’s Minister of Economy and Public Finance from 2013 to 2015 and as a National Deputy from 2015 to 2019. He has also had an extensive academic career as a researcher and professor of economics and has authored several books on economic theory and political economy. As Governor, he leads Argentina’s largest province, home to 38 percent of the country’s population and accounting for more than one-third of national GDP and half of Argentina’s manufacturing value added.
