November 17th:  Reflections on the past, present, and future of Brazil

Speaker: Albert Fishlow, Professor Emeritus, Columbia University

About the Brazil Seminar

The seminar welcomes those who may be learning about Brazil for the first time, as well as those who are already well acquainted with its people, society, and culture and wish to delve deeper into particular areas of interest.

This series was designed to discuss major economic, political, and social problems of contemporary Brazil with expert analysts, activists, business leaders, and public figures. Our approach is unusual in its reliance upon a stream of outside speakers rather than on a fixed syllabus and set of lectures by the instructor only. We also prioritize a practitioner’s perspective, using Brazil as a reference to discuss
challenges that emerging economies face in their development path.

The year 2021 has seen a once-in-a-generation event with the emergence of COVID-19. In particular, Brazil has been hit hard as one of the epicenters of the crisis, in a time where the country was attempting to recover from the deepest economic recession in its history. On the bright side, the public health system has shown and contributed to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. Bolsa Familia, the largest poverty alleviation program in the world, has played a major role in providing assistance to the neediest. Fears of President Bolsonaro’s threat to the rule of law have not materialized so far. You will find that most of the speakers this spring will be addressing one or another aspect of those underlying themes.
