Cuba´s Pandemic Response: Lessons for Public Health Pharma

SPEAKERS:

Dr. Vicente Vérez Bencomo, director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute, developer of
two of Cuba’s COVID-19 vaccines. Dr. Bencomo, a recipient of the World Intellectual
Property Organization’s Gold Medal for his research on an earlier vaccine, will review
Cuba’s COVID-19 vaccine R&D, and update audience on WHO approvals and vaccine adaptations for new variants.

Dr. Sonia Resik, head of the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute’s Virology
Laboratory, and coordinator of vaccine clinical trials carried out in community healthcare
settings. Dr. Resik will review the results of the Cuban COVID-19 vaccination program and its rollout to date.

Dr. Agustín Lage, advisor to the president of BioCubaFarma, and former director of
the Molecular Immunology Center (CIM). CIM is the only Cuban institution that has a
US-licensed joint venture with an US entity: CIM and Roswell Park Comprehensive
Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY, have joined for clinical trials of CIM’s therapeutic cancer
vaccine and other Cuban cancer products. Lage is one of Cuban biotech’s pioneers and

will talk about its domestic and global prospects for the future.
