About this Event
The symposium seeks to reflect on the state of Indigenous and diasporic language preservation and instruction in the first two decades of the 21st century, and reflect on the future of learning and teaching in the digital era.
El simposio busca reflexionar sobre el estado de la preservación e instrucción de las lenguas indígenas y diaspóricas en las dos primeras décadas del siglo XXI, y reflexionar sobre el futuro del aprendizaje y la enseñanza en la era digital.
Hindsight is 2020 seeks to bring Indigenous and diasporic language instructors, students and activists together virtually to discuss the strengths and challenges that have come with our "new normal" of online learning. This symposium seeks to dispel the stigma surrounding online learning by bringing in successful examples of years of training by instructors and students who have excelled in creating professional paths by combining language and technology. Over two weekends, there will be notable keynote speakers, panels discussing the challenges that students and instructors must contend with classes over Zoom, and also address the maneuvering between online and in-person learning in this ever-shifting context; workshops on innovative methodologies for child education and youth development by language activists; and performances by artists representing various indigenous and diasporic languages.
Este simposio busca reunir virtualmente a instructores de idiomas indígenas y diaspóricos, estudiantes y activistas para discutir las fortalezas y desafíos que han surgido con nuestra "nueva normalidad" de aprendizaje en línea. Este simposio busca disipar el estigma que rodea al aprendizaje en línea al traer ejemplos exitosos de años de capacitación por parte de instructores y estudiantes que se han destacado en la creación de caminos profesionales combinando lenguaje y tecnología. Durante dos fines de semana, habrá presentadores notables, paneles que discutirán los desafíos que los estudiantes e instructores deben enfrentar con las clases sobre Zoom, y también abordarán las maniobras entre el aprendizaje en línea y en persona en este contexto en constante cambio; talleres sobre metodologías innovadoras para la educación infantil y el desarrollo de la juventud a cargo de activistas del lenguaje; y presentaciones de artistas que representan distintas lenguas indígenas y diaspóricas.

Born in Ayutla Mixe, Oaxaca, Yásnaya Elena Aguilar Gil is an Ayuujk linguist, writer, translator, and human-rights activist. She has written for a variety of media in Mexico, including Letras Libres, Nexos, and Revista de la Universidad de México.
