ILAS Academic Programs

ILAS offers flexible degree programs designed to develop interdisciplinary expertise on the opportunities and challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean.


Undergraduate Programs

Combine general mastery of a discipline of your choice with critical language and cultural skills, all while learning from Columbia’s renowned faculty.  ILAS offers a major, minor, and concentration for students at Columbia. 

ILAS also offers a BA/MA Program for current Columbia students (Columbia College, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of General Studies, and Barnard College) in their junior or senior undergraduate year who are interested in completing an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Students accepted into the program take graduate-level courses as undergraduates that count toward their MA degree requirements.

 

Graduate Programs

ILAS offers an interdisciplinary MA degree that provides a broad social science-based approach to Latin America and the Caribbean, past and present. Students deepen their knowledge of the political, economic, social, and cultural processes shaping the region. The program uniquely combines an interdisciplinary core set of courses with ample flexibility to allow students to develop a custom-tailored area of study. Students develop an original thesis project and design an individualized program of study that supports their academic or professional goals.  The program is designed for students interested in deepening their regional expertise and strengthening their research, analytical, and writing skills who seek to pursue academic careers or careers in the non-profit, public, or private sectors. ILAS also offers a certificate program to MA and PhD graduate students who complete an interdisciplinary program in conjunction with their own departmental degrees.
