Post-election in Brazil: What Happens Next?

Given the sharply divided second round in Brazil, in which the former president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva gained a third term over the current president Jair Bolsonaro, it is time to reflect on the outcome of 2022 elections in Brazil. By combining scholars and advocates from different fields, including economics, health, law and climate, this event seeks to provide a comprehensive, yet in-depth and critical debate on Brazil's political future under Lula'’ presidency in light of Bolsonaro'’ legacy, and  assess the challenges and opportunities ahead.

  • Paulo Blikstein, Associate Professor at Columbia University, Director of the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies
  • Thiago Amparo, Professor of International and Human Rights Law at FGV Law School in Sao Paulo (Brazil) and is a visiting scholar at Columbia University.

 

Panelists: 

  • Laura Carvalho, Open Society’s global director of Equity and an Associate Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of São Paulo
  • Fernanda Cimini, Professor of International Political Economy at Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University.
  • Natalia Pasternak, Adjunct Senior Research Scholar in International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and President of the Question of Science Institute.
  • Alexandre Scheinder, Former Secretary of Education of São Paulo, member of the core transition team on education of Brazil's new government, Researcher at Fundação Getulio Vargas.
  • Sheila de Carvalho, human rights lawyer, director of Political Incidence at the Peregum Black Reference Institute and member of Black Coalition for Rights, and member of the core transition team on public security and justice of Brazil's new government.
