The Cuba Program of the Institute of Latin American Studies, Columbia University, issued the second printing of Cuba-US Relations: Normalization and Its Challenges on April 24, 2017.
A joint project of ILAS and the Centro de Investigaciones de Política Internacional of the Instituto Superior de Relaciones Internacionales in Havana, Cuba, the volume analyzes the background to the decision on the part of Presidents Barack Obama and Raúl Castro to end 55 years of hostility and move towards normalization. The books focuses on the first two years of the Cuba-US normalization process delving into how US-Cuban diplomatic relations were resumed in 2015 and the progress made in such areas as security, environmental, and immigration cooperation, as well as interdicting human and drug trafficking.
The 22 authors come from Cuba, Canada, and the US and represent a variety of perspectives. Chapters include the role of international pressure, as well as expert opinion, on the resumption of diplomatic relations, possible solutions to mutual claims, as well as sanctions, and political, economic, and diplomatic impediments to further normalization. The authors combine expertise with real world experience in international relations. The book is the first in a series of Cuba Program publications. The next volume will be a primer on doing business in Cuba and the third will be an examination of lessons derived from the experience of non-state Cuban entrepreneurs in building successful businesses on the island.
